Music Video Analysis - Katy Perry Unconditionally

Katy Perry – Unconditionally
Music is playing throughout the video, no other sound effects added.

The music video begins with multiple fades in showing the dancers hand movements in time to the music. This close up shows two of the characters dancing.

You then see the artist Katy Perry as the camera tilts up to a mid-shot. The artist is wearing a white dress, white connotes purity and innocence. This links in with the white, snowy, delicate scenery. The actions of the artist make her seem graceful. The snow falling contributes to the feel of innocence and purity that Katy Perry is conveying.

Although the majority of the music video is eye level the camera moves upwards to a high angle. This angle shows the whole setting, the dancers and the artist. The setting in this section of the music video is extravagant with props including large chandeliers and a big bed. The dancers circle around the artist showing that she is the centre of the video.
An effect added to this music video that has been multiply used is slow motion. The owl flying that changes from normal speed to slow motion suggests wisdom, grace and elegance.

The clothing and the hairstyle in this music video are compiled from a range of different styles from different time periods, including the 19th century and the 30's.

Another special effect that has been added to the music video is the fire elements. Also the exploding car and flying glass and flowers. The fire suggest a burning passion between lovers, this links into the meaning of the song. The flowers suggests a delicate type of love.
Although the most common shot type in this music video is a close up, long shots have also been used. A long shot shows the audience the characters and the setting. The artist stands out from the other characters in the shot because of the clothing worn. The white pure dress is more prominent than the darker clothing worn.
Extreme close ups of people's hands and shoulders showing the intimacy and conveying emotion.

Close ups have been predominantly used in this music video.  Close ups clearly show the artists facial expressions showing they are the main character.
The shallow depth of field hides the detail of the dancers in the background. The shallow depth of field draws the audience’s attention towards the artist.
The end shot of the music video is from a high angle zooming out and fading to black. The flowers placed on the undamaged car in the snowy scenery show all of the different elements shown throughout the music video together.
